Events. HC vs TPB

September will see Marvel release their Age of Ultron Hardcover, an oversized collection featuring the main event and all relevant tie ins. They did a similar thing with the beautiful AvX hardcover and it's companion.

It's a great way to save money and read an event together instead of waiting for various trades being released separately and the presentation is top class. They also come with a digital code, adding years to the books life and saves the hassle of lugging one of these monsters on to the train with you every morning. However I'm also a fan of a whole line rebranding on paperbacks, events like House of M and Civil War look amazing on a shelf when collected together. So I thought I'd put the question out to you fellow collectors.

One larger, cheaper hardcover collecting the whole event?

or
A run of similarly styled  trade paperbacks?

or like ‏@damien14273 are you happy to mix them up as long as you're getting to read the event?

Answers below please :)

Todays New Trades 24/07/13

Quiet week huh? I'd be interested in getting a look at IDW's Locke & Key Treasury Edition TP which is an oversized reprinting of the fight between Tyler and the Shadow Creature from Crown of Shadows. Bendis' last trade from over a decade on Avengers and Hit Girl by Millar/Romita jr will complete my spend. Be sure to look out for different covers on the Hit Girl book as there is both John Romita jr and Movie versions available.

Marvel also have their traditional event prelude out. This time it is Infinity Incoming and seriously,  don't waste your money. Collecting:
Inhumans (98) #2
Thanos Rising #1
Avengers ('12) #1-2

The Retweet Competition

Over on twitter ( @sciencepie)  I'm running a retweet competition.  Once Trading Standards hits 5000 visits I will be picking one of the retweeters at random and giving away one trade paperback.

Currently the site stands at just over 4600 visits.

Unfortunately the prize will only be available to those of you that reside in the EU due to postage costs. Here is a list of the titles that the winner will be able to pick from.

Astonishing Thor
X-Men Origins
Wolverine The Reckoning
New Mutants The Return of Legion
Superman Red Son
Halo Fall of Reach

No new trades!

Apologies for no new trades list this week. There's actually very little out and my pick would have to be volume 2 of Tim Seeley' s beautiful noir horror Revival.

I know a lot of European readers are interest in Panini's Marvel reprints and like myself can get frustrated with the lack of release information.  I was speaking with them on Facebook earlier so here's what they had to say.

They only trades I've read since last post have been volume 2 of Saga and Manhattan Projects.  Both every bit as good as their predecessors.  Expect reviews soon. Other than that I've been giving some of my newer books a more thorough re-read

Which book do you love no matter how many times you read it? My picks would be Locke & Key and Spider-Man: Back in Black. Answers in the comments please.

Todays New Trades 10/11/2013

Hawkeye Volume 2 and some other comics or something. It should be noted that Vol 1 of FF from Marvel contains issues #4-8 as the first 3 issues are collected in Fantastic Four volume 1. That's not confusing at all.

DC have the pricey but gorgeous Blackest Night, Absolute Edition. This Slipcased, 576 page hardcover collects:

Blackest Night #0-8,
material from DC Universe #0,
Green Lantern #44-48, 50-52.
Bonus material includes: Character sketches and designs, Blackest Night #1 script, as well as commentary from several members of the creative team.

Top Selling 25 Trades. June 2013

No surprises for the top two trades selling in June with the latest instalments of The Walking Dead and Saga both out from image comics. The new 52 makes a big dent in the top 25 as well now that DC's volume 1's are making their way on to shelves. Boom also make a rare high appearance with their Adventure Time, licence to print money.

The best selling list also serves as a great reminder that fans are still buying the books they want despite news site depictions of outrage. Before Watchmen is doing very well and set to continue from what I've seen. Deadpool is still an almost guaranteed to get in to the top 10, even though the bubble has allegedly burst for Merc witha Mouth.

Marvels Oversized Hardcovers

Outwith collecting hardcovers and paperback, another way to collect your favourite Marvel ongoing series is with their over sized HC's. Usually a year after the paperbacks and containing 2-4 story arcs these books are often very affordable compared to the equivalent number of paperbacks. For myself this means I can concentrate my money on other runs that are less likely to be collected in this format.

They are a pleasure to read, The larger pages beautifully display the artwork inside, (although in the case of the Matt Fraction, Uncanny X-Men OHC's, this also means more of Greg Lands art.) Well put together and bound they sit open perfectly on your lap and there's no gutter loss.

Some of my favourite so far include:

Invincible Iron Man Oversized HC, Volume 1
Fraction/Larroca
Issues #1-19

Daredevil by Mark Waid. Volume 1
Waid/Rivera/Martin/Rios/Kano/Pham.
Issues #1-10, 10.1; Amazing Spider-Man (1963) 677

X-Force Volume 1.
Kyle/Yost/Crain.
Issues #1-11.

Spider-Man: Big Time Ultimate Collection.
Slott/Ramos.
Issues #648-662 & 654.1

Brubaker/Epting.
Issues 22-42, Winter Soldier: Winter Kills.

The OHC I'm most looking forward to?

Hawkeye Oversized HC.
Fraction/Aja.
Issues #1-11, Young Avengers Presents 6

Todays New Trades 03/07/13

It doesn't get much quieter than this for a weeks releases, still a couple of gems in there though. Daredevil End of Days is the book I'm most looking forward to..... @ComicBookKidUK of  Comic Book Kid UK says that it is.

" The best series I've read in a while, Bendis back on top and the book that got me back into reading the Daredevil ongoing series."

I also wouldn't say no to Mark Millar's Wolverine omnibus if anyone wants to treat me?

Mini Trade Reviews

Avengers Arena. Volume 1. Kill or Die
#1-6
Written by: Dennis Hopeless
Art by: Kev Walker.

This was the ugly duckling of the otherwise super stylish Marvel NOW! Relaunch. Very few people had anything nice to say about it based solely on it's premise. Fortunately for the non believers this book very quickly realised it's potential, action packed and full of drama, AA is the first Teen Hero book I've enjoyed since Runaways and Hopeless manages to take a pretty over the top character like Arcade and turn him into a right creepy and sinister bastard.

The Strange Talent of Luthor Strode. Volume 1.
#1-6
Written by: Justin Jordan
Art by: Tradd Moore.

In a similar style to Kick Ass, this story of geeky kid turned reluctant hero has it all, sex, ultra-violence and adorable Bromance. It also has possibly my favourite origin of super powers I've ever read. Jordan does a great job creating these believable teens and their nemesis is one scary dude. The artwork is incredible and beautifully coloured,  the fight scenes in particular make this book worth every penny. The ending sold me volume 2 instantly,  and I definitely didn't cry :-)

The Walking Dead volume 18. What comes after.
#103-108
Written by: Robert Kirkman
Art by: Charlie Adlard.

I'm really struggling to keep going with the Walking Dead, after devouring the first 17 volumes it seems like very little has changed through 100 issues. The story just seems to constantly cycle between strikingly similar status quos and now any new bad guy that is brought in always just pales in comparison to the Governor. There's going to have to be the mother of all twists to get me back on board.

Happy. Volume 1.
#1-4
Written by: Grant Morrison
Art by: Darrick Robertson.

Grant Morrison uses up comics yearly quota of the word cunt. Darrick Robertson art is phenomenal, perhaps even his best yet from an already impressive career.
